Barriers to Language Learning

The only prerequisite you need to learn foreign languages is to be human. If you are one read on.

You might not believe me but your only barrier is probably yourself. We have all learnt a language (or two). The only advantage we have when we are young is that our motivation to communicate is huge, we have lots of people who patiently help us, try to understand us and speak to us slowly with lots of repetition. We learn the words that are important to us first and the expressions we most need to get what we want. Also at the age of 2 you don’t tend to chastise yourself if you make a grammatical error you’re just happy if you’ve got your message across. If you can apply those same techniques your journey will be more fruitful.

What are your barriers to Language Learning?

Whether you think:

You can click on the different sections above for your predicament but ultimately the same steps will help you for any one of these obstacles:

  • Do as little as 20 minutes a day

    Chill!

    Chill!

  • Learn the language using resources that interest you and make you laugh
  • If after a good go you don’t like a certain method switch to something else
  • Get support from a patient teacher or person that speaks the language well
  • Try not to feel a prick mimicking the accent – alien sounds to you are perfectly normal to native speakers
  • Listen to the language as much as you can even if you can’t understand at first in order to tune your ear to the rhythm and the commonly used words and expressions
  • Practice on native or fluent speakers even if you feel you are crap – feel the fear and do it anyway
  • Laugh at your mistakes but at the same time know that making those mistakes is improving your language
  • Most important of all relax, enjoy and have fun!

You cannot learn if you are anxious, worried, bored or demotivated.
